To wrap up the 2020 League of Legends World Championship quarterfinals, G2 Esports swept Gen.G 3-0, advancing to the semis. Though Gen.G showed an incredible performance boost in their second round-robin of the group stage, they were unable to elevate their level higher to take down G2 to continue through the tournament. After their series, Gen.G spoke with the press about their games and overall Worlds performance.

(To oDin) What do you think is needed for the LCK to retrieve their old dominant playstyle and bridge the gap between the LEC and LPL?

oDin: I think the LCK has improved much already. We were quite confident, but since we lost, I don’t have much to say.

(To coach Tom) How did you change up the draft for this series, and how much of the outcome was due to the draft, and how much was due to the execution?

Tom: We were confident in playing a game where there’s Twisted Fate. We intended to play including Twisted Fate, but G2 players played so tight that we lost the first two games. In game 3, we thought about banning Twisted Fate, but it wasn’t necessary to ban him from the red side, so we let it through and thought we should do what we need to do. We were confident in playing the Twisted Fate vs Galio or vs Sylas matchup. It’s regretful that we lost. As for the outcome, I think it’s half from the draft and half from the execution.

(To Ruler) Although you lost, your performance was great in lane. Do you think you could have done more?

Ruler: I definitely think that I could have done better, but there were parts where I underperformed, so that’s really regretful.

(To Clid) You have experience playing in both the LPL and the LCK. How would you evaluate the LCK and LPL teams at Worlds? Do you think DAMWON Gaming is better than the others?

Clid: I don’t think there’s that much of a difference. When I was in the LPL, I’ve never been to Worlds. This year, it wouldn’t be weird if any team wins or loses.

(To oDin) You played against both G2 and DWG. Who do you think will win in the semifinals?

oDin: I think it will be really close and intense. Since we’re from the LCK, I think that DWG will win.

(To Ruler) It’s your fourth Worlds. What did you learn from this Worlds?

Ruler: By playing against foreign teams, I learned how to move around from the early game to the late game. Through this experience, I think I can do better next year.

(To Bdd) In game 3, you were in the brush when G2 players were surrounding you. You flashed out nearly at the same time. Did you know that they were there?

Bdd: In both games 1 and 2, it felt that G2 laid early aggression, so I was in that brush since I had to see. I was anticipating something, so I was able to react with my flash.

(To oDin) What was the most difficult thing this year? What did you learn?

oDin: The most difficult thing was that I was the interim head coach this year for the first time. There was a lot of pressure. Still, the players and coaches trusted me and followed me, so it was much relieved. What I felt this year was that the players, coaches, and I all grew a lot. It’s regretful that we lost today, but that’s the positive aspect that I’m taking away.

(To Clid) How did you prepare for game 3 after losing the first two games? How did you plan your strategies?

Clid: After the first two games, we thought that it’s the same as the beginning and that we could still win. As for today, I think I lacked much compared to my teammates’ expectations of me. We didn’t prepare any special strategies; we thought we would be able to win if we just did what we needed to do.

(To oDin) Gen.G had quite high expectations this year. It seemed that today’s performance didn’t look that good. Was there a reason? Was G2 better than expectations?

oDin: We were overly confident today, but G2 prepared well and played well. They simply played better. Whether it’s the draft, or the plays, I think we lost because of me. I want to say that the players did well. Today’s loss was from me.

(To oDin) In a best-of series, the outcome of game 1 is really important. Do you think losing the first game affected the outcome of the whole series?

oDin: I agree that game 1 is the most important. It was really regretful that we lost game 1, but we watched FNC vs TES yesterday and was confident that we could do the same. Even the players weren’t that shaken up. It’s regretful, but losing the first game had quite a big effect.

(To oDin) What do you think Gen.G needs to improve to get better results next year?

oDin: As shown in today’s match, there’s a lot we need to improve like mid to late game macro and rotation and more. But more than that, this year, I was the problem. We were aware of certain things to improve, but I insisted on my coaching style. What we need to improve, we can think of next year. Today’s loss is all on me.

(To Bdd) It’s regretful that it feels Gen.G wasn’t able to show everything they prepared for this competition. What’s the biggest disappointment in this Worlds?

Bdd: When we were preparing for the group stage, there was some anxiety while practicing. But when we were preparing for the quarterfinals, everything went so well, so I thought it would go well. Unfortunately, that didn’t channel to the actual matches, and that’s the most regretful.
