Hector “H3CZ” Rodriguez has reacquired the OpTic Gaming brand, The Esports Observer reported Thursday. H3CZ, who is a co-owner and CEO of NRG Esports, has reportedly closed the deal separately from his ties with NRG, with negotiations "spanning a little over a month", TEO's Kevin Hitt writes.
The acquisition reunites H3CZ with OpTic Gaming after Immortals acquired OpTic Gaming's parent company, Infinite Esports & Entertainment, in June 2019 leading to H3CZ's eventual departure from the org that September. For years, H3CZ has been seen as the driving force behind OpTic's brand, as he became its CEO in 2007. "That ain't us", H3CZ tweeted in July, shortly after OpTic's ownership changed hands.
"It was all on the Infinite side, it was more with my Infinite experience that made me realize that it just wasn’t the place for me, and I needed to turn the page and go onto a brand new chapter, and I’m excited for it,” H3CZ later told ESPN.
With H3CZ reportedly taking ownership of OpTic again, he will have to solve the conflict of interest in the Call of Duty League. NRG already holds one slot in the league through Chicago Huntsmen, while OpTic Gaming is in through the Los Angeles franchise. According to TEO's sources, H3CZ will have to "divest to interested esports organizations" so that CDL can approve the change.
