UPDATE 9/30: The four qualifying teams from the play-ins have been drawn into their respective main event groups. Team Liquid in A; PS Talon in B; LGD Gaming in C; and Unicorns of Love in D. The table below has been updated.
Original story:
The pairings for the 2020 League of Legends World Championship group stage and play-ins were drawn Tuesday, Sept. 15. With the tournament taking place in China, LPL legends Gao "WeiXiao" Xue-Cheng, Liu "Mlxg" Shi-Yu, and Ming "Clearlove" Kai hosted the ceremony.
10 of the 22 teams will start in the play-in stage, four of which will advance to the group stage, where the best performing teams from the major regions are waiting. As per recent reports, there will be no Vietnamese (VCS) teams attending due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to the change of format for the play-in stage and promoting LCK's third seed directly to the group stage.
The top 2 teams of each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The format of the playoffs is single elimination best-of-5.
Groups B and D already look stacked, with DAMWON Gaming and JD Gaming coming in as two of the favorites to take it all home. This makes it a difficult group for LEC's third seed Rogue — and so is group D for FlyQuest. The LCS runner-ups are matched with LPL winners Top Esports and LCK's DRX, which will make for a hard climb to the playoffs.
Group C sets up a great NA versus EU match-up between TSM and Fnatic, but the group will likely to get LGD Gaming as its fourth team (provided they qualify from the play-ins), which could set up another eastern domination between them and Gen.G.
Group A | Group B | Group C | Group D |
G2 Esports | DAMWON Gaming | Team SoloMid | Top Esports |
Suning | JD Gaming | Fnatic | DRX |
Machi Esports | Rogue | Gen.G | FlyQuest |
Team Liquid | PSG Talon | LGD Gaming | Unicorns of Love |
