On August 12, while playing against FunPlus Phoenix in the group stage of the €15,000 Allied Esports Odyssey — a major tournament part of Riot Games' official Ignition Series in VALORANT — G2 Esports Sage player David "Davidp" Pins found out that his father had passed away.

For Davidp, the decision what to do on that day was clear: he had to step out of the server, but since admins could not allow for a pause or reschedule of the match, FPX won 13-9, dealing G2's only 0-2 loss in its albeit short VALORANT history. Until then, G2 held an 18-0 record (33-5 in maps) as the undisputed best team in Europe, and perhaps worldwide. 

For most players, the news of such personal loss would sideline them for the rest of the tournament, but Davidp rallied instead. On the very next day, August 13, the player informed his organization that he doesn't want to leave the team hanging and he made it back for the match against Ninjas in Pyjamas. Fighting through the mourning, Davidp helped G2 dismantle NiP 2-0 (13-11 on Ascent, 13-8 on Bind) — a win that helped them stay in the running and eventually finish third in the group stage.

What followed was a clinic of playoffs from a team, whose mental fortitude in such time of crisis comes out as nothing less than admirable. G2 got their revenge against FPX in the first round of the upper bracket, beating them 13-10 on Split. As the playoffs bracket progressed, G2 only got stronger and stronger. A 13-9 win against Team Liquid followed before G2 faced FPX for the third and final time, as the Phoenix made it to the finals from the lower bracket.

In what will come down as their most impressive Ignition Series final so far, G2 overpowered FPX in two swift games. The firepower of the "samurai" took Ascent 13-5 and then flipped a 5-7 deficit in game 2 on Bind to claim the map 13-9. 

This is the fourth Ignition Series title for the organization and the fifth straight for Davidp, following Mandatory.gg Cup, WePlay! Invitational, Vitality European Open, and G2 Esports Invitational (as part of Team Mixwell). With over $15,000 in winnings in under two months, Davidp also ranks as the seventh highest-earning player in VALORANT. 

He dedicated his fifth straight to his father.
