AF Fly: "Chovy’s an amazing player who's still very young. I’m jealous of him."

On July 30 (KST), Afreeca Freecs swept Hanwha Life Esports in the 2020 League of Legends Champions Korea Summer Split. The match went without many surprises as Afreeca Freecs dominated Hanwha Life Esports. In the match, Song “Fly” Yong-jun had a great performance and was voted as Player of the Game for game 2. Fly joined Inven for an interview after the match.

Congrats on the win. How do you feel?

It was a match we couldn’t lose. Our head coach gave us pressure that we really shouldn’t lose to Hanwha Life Esports, and it’s a relief that we won.

What did you focus on the most against them?

We were quite aware of Galio that they used in the games they won. Our coaching staff gathered data on that and I had faith in the coaching staff so we banned Galio. I have full trust in the coaching staff.

Spirit used to express his little grudge against NoFe, Hanwha Life Esports’ coach. Did he say anything about that today?

He doesn’t talk about that as much now, but he did say that he really didn’t want to lose.

You played Orianna and Zoe today, contributing massively to today’s win. Furthermore, you were unanimously voted as POG in game 2. Were you in a good condition today?

Rather than today, I’ve been doing well recently. Yeah, I’ve been in a good condition recently.

It seems like you like the two champions you used today a lot. If you were to win Worlds one day, which champion would you like to make a skin for?

If I need to pick from those two, I think it would be Zoe. Zoe appears more often and it’s more fun to play than Orianna.

What do you think was the main point of today’s win?

Ahead of today’s teamfights, we smashed them in the laning phase. Because of that, there was less and less to do for them; the outcome became obvious.

In the last match, Spirit was trying to calm the players down, telling everyone not to laugh in the comms. Did the team discuss that before the game, to control your emotions?

There was something about not laughing, so we tried not to. I actually don’t mind much. You can’t control emotions if you’re human. I also don’t want to look upset even when we won.

Fans call you Song-hyeong [Rookie’s nickname — Ed.] of the LCK. How do you like it?

It feels good because it sounds good. Although it’s based on a comparison between me and Rookie, it’s still good. I don’t mind much about how other people see me.

Afreeca Freecs also has a nickname: “Strong team verifier”. It isn’t that pleasant of a nickname. What do you think?

We didn’t talk about it much within the team. Personally, I really don’t care. Fans gave us the nickname, and whatever it is, I don’t want us to be shaken up by that. We just need to do what we have to do.

To get rid of that kind of nickname, you would need to take down the stronger teams in the league. What do you need to improve to do that?

I think we need to play without feeling pressured. Also, I’d like to be carried by the top and bottom lanes as well. [Laughs]

Your next match is against DRX and Chovy. Chovy is one of the best mid laners in the league. What do you think of him?

Chovy’s an amazing player who's still very young. I’m jealous of him. I often think, "I should have played like him, as well as him when I was his age." That’s it. I don’t have that much time left as a player and I need to give my all until then.

Lastly, a word to the fans?

You saw our bottom in our match against DAMWON Gaming. Don’t expect too much from us [Laughs]. We’ll still do our best to prepare for our match against DRX. Don’t have too high expectations, but we need your cheers. Whoever wins, it will be 2-0.
