Riot Games revealed the rebrand of competitive League of Legends, ‘LoL Esports’.
The brand of LoL Esports focuses on the competitive aspects of League of Legends, which not only represents international competitions such as Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), LoL World Championship (Worlds), and All-Star, but also the 12 regional leagues, which includes LCK (KR), LPL (CN), LEC (EU), LCS (NA). With this rebrand, their goal is to provide sports entertainment in its highest caliber.
Currently, the 2020 Summer split across all regions showed an increased online average viewership per minute from the previous year. According to a report by Stream Hatchet, a company that analyzes and provides data for various video game streaming websites, it stated that there’s been a 129% increase in average viewers per minute for the four major regional leagues, the LCK, the LPL, the LEC, and the LCS. This report proves that the interest in League of Legends esports by fans around the world is increasing on a global scale.
John Needham, the Global Head of Esports at Riot games, stated, “We aspire to bring joy to billions of LoL Esports fans around the world. It starts with building a thriving global esports ecosystem supported by electrifying competition, sustainable growth, cutting-edge technology, bold entertainment, and a focus on integrity for our teams and the sport. From regional leagues, which captivated millions of fans around the world, to the iconic moments of the World Championship trophy being lifted, it can all be met through LoL Esports”.
This past year, League of Legends celebrated its 10 year anniversary of its service. WIth Riot Games preparing for the next 10 years, they’ve also unveiled a new logo for LoL Esports, which was inspired by the in-game map, the ‘Summoner’s Rift’.
There are three new video series that will come alongside the rebrand of LoL Esports. First is ‘Weekly Rundown’, which highlights the matches and news in LoL esports, ‘The Penta’, which highlights the five best plays of the week around the world, and lastly, ‘Champ Select’, which will focus on the best performing players in each region.
Sang-heon Oh, Director of Esports Business at Riot Games, stated, “2020 is the year that marks the 10th year anniversary of global LoL esports, and at the same time, the year in which we prepare for its next 10 years. With LoL Esports’ vision of bringing quality entertainment to LoL fans around the world, LCK are also preparing to take its next steps in building an esports ecosystem that will thrive for many generations.”
