On the 16th (KST), SANDBOX Gaming took down SeolHaeOne Prince in the 2020 LCK Summer split. With a set score of 2-0, SB continued their match win streak. With the number of assists scored by the support player for SB, GorillA, he became the first support player in the LCK to score 4,000 assists.
He joined the press room at LoL Park for a post-match interview.
How does it feel to score 4,000 assists in the LCK and take the victory.
The personal data of the support player never got the spotlight, but this time, it did with my 4,000th assist. It really feels good, and even better that we’re continuing our win streak.
Were you aware that you were going to set the record today?
Before the Spring split, I asked Riot if there’s going to be any spotlight given to the support players. At the time, Score was still a jungler, and because of his high number of assists, it might be hard for Riot to take care of the support player. However, I did score my 4,000th assist, and I’m very happy that they recognized the record.
Although that record was scored at round 2, the team lost the game.
In game 2, we turned around the enemy’s tower dive. Although we hoped to win it, we lost focus towards the mid-late game and lost. I thought to myself that I needed to just focus on winning game 3 no matter what.
Did you celebrate the occasion with the team?
After the match, there was a cake waiting for me in the waiting room. I was very emotional.
How do you feel about the record of getting 4,000 assists?
The first thing I thought to myself was, “Wow, I’ve been doing this for a long time, huh?” Other support players like Mata and Wolf all are former world champions, but not me. That’s what really disappointed me. Although this record might not be a trophy, I’m still happy that I left a mark in LoL esports history. I know that I’m the record holder for having the most assists at Worlds, so I want to return to Worlds and set the bar higher.
The word is that you’re also translating for the team as well.
Although we do have a translator on the team, he can’t come on stage with us during the draft. Usually, the other players understand long sentences, but since there’s a time limit during the draft, I sometimes translate for the team. It reminds me of my time in Europe, where I also had a translator back then, but had to study all the in-game vocabulary myself.
What is the one thing that you’re anticipating, in the midst of being in a celebratory mood?
I think that I’m performing better on an individual level. Although we’re on a four-match win streak, those wins don’t include the top teams in the standings. I’m hoping that the matches against them will be more even in round 2.
In your opinion, who played the key role in the win streak?
It has to be FATE. He was already a great player, but he’s a rookie, so including his mentality, there were many things he needed to work on. He and the coaching staff worked hard to fix his flaws, and the results have been tremendous.
How do you think the team will do in round 2?
Well, hopefully, we win all our matches (laughter). Even if we can’t, I want to at least make it to the playoffs. If we don’t, the break in between is too long. Playoffs will be our initial goal, and once we achieve it, I want the achievement to be the footing for our journey to Worlds. When I was on ROX Tigers and Longzhu Gaming, things were hard because I was too busy. However, experiencing a long break made me realize that being busy is a good thing. I hope things stay busy.
Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say?
The team’s now on a four-match win streak. We’ll make sure to ride the momentum to create a better version of ourselves, and make it into the playoffs.
