On the 24th (KST), kt Rolster shut out Hanwha Life Esports in the 2020 League of Legends Champions Korea Summer Split. It was the first win for Song “Smeb” Kyung-ho since his return. After the match, Smeb joined the media room to talk about how it was during his break and what it meant for him to return.
You broke the losing streak through today’s win. How do you feel?
I’ve been practicing and playing without any free time. This first win is really sweet and I feel happy that it’s like I’m getting rewarded for my hard work.
Last week, you almost won against Gen.G, but they turned it around. Didn’t that loss linger in your head?
In our match against Gen.G, our performance wasn’t that bad. The only thing that lingered was that only if I played a little bit better. That match was my return match. I just thought it could happen and concentrated on today’s game.
How did you spend your time off?
While taking a break during the spring season, I played a lot of solo queue to regain my confidence. Even when I was playing solo queue, I was troubled inside. I was worried I might not be able to come back and I wasn’t sure that I’d be able to play well again. So I decided that I should return whether or not I play well. I could have gone abroad, but that last season where I played bad stuck in my mind and I wanted to come back to the LCK. Thankfully, KT contacted me.
Many people are saying that KT plays towards the top side. What do you think?
To become a strong team, we need to know how to lay strength on whichever lane. Before, KT mostly played towards the bot side. Although we’re still creaky, if we do our best in our practice, everything would get better.
You said that CloudTemplar inspired you to play Mordekaiser.
When we were preparing for the exhibition match on AfreecaTV, I was solo killed by CloudTemplar’s Mordekaiser. It actually didn’t inspire me that much, but I could say that it did a little bit. (Laughs)
You were once considered one of the best ever top laners, but it was far from your reputation last year. How high do you think you are compared to your prime?
All I’m thinking about is doing my best at what I can do right now. Obviously, there’s a lot to go to reach my prime. I’m just thinking that if I keep doing my best, I might be able to reach that point again.
You’ll be playing against DAMWON Gaming. How do you think it’ll go against Nuguri?
Nuguri is an amazing top laner. He may be the best top laner in this meta. I’ll be putting my head together with SoHwan about how we’ll face him.
Any last comments?
When I came to LoL Park today, it was less awkward compared to last time. It felt odd standing there and I thought that it was a good thing that I decided to come back. We used to have fun with the fans if we won so I hope the coronavirus pandemic goes away soon so that we can meet up with the fans. I’ll make sure that I do well in our next match. Thank you.
