Riot Games has announced the Mid-Season Cup, a tournament between the LoL Pro League and the League of Legends Champions Korea. With the Mid Season Invitational being canceled due to the risks it would impose on the health of players and staff in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, the publisher has decided to have an online tournament instead.
Initially postponed to July, then redlined, the MSI
would bring together the Spring Split champions of both Chinese and Korean regions, clashing against each other on the rift. The event is highly anticipated by the League of Legends community and it happens yearly. With the championship canceled, one of the rewards of winning the Spring Split has simply disappeared, until now.
The 2020 Mid-Season Cup will bring together eight teams from both regions. Four LPL representatives versus four LCK representatives. The teams entering the tournament have placed among the top four teams in their leagues during the Spring Split.
Representing the LPL are JD Gaming, Spring Champions of this year, followed by Top Esport, FunPlus Phoenix, and Invictus Gaming. Constituting the LCK teams, we have the fan favorites T1, champions of the LCK 2020 Spring Split, accompanied by Geng.G, DragonX, and DAMWON Gaming.
The tournament will happen entirely online, without the presence of an audience, with the LCK teams playing from the LoL Park, in Seoul, South Korea, and the LPL teams playing from the LPL Arena, in Shanghai, China. To ensure players have proper technical conditions, Riot Games will make the use of alternative tools to create the ideal ping of 30-40m/s.
The LPL has announced on Twitter that the tournament will be kicking off on May 28th, at 3 PM CST, lasting for two days. Starting things off, we have a fiery match between 2019 world champions FunPlus Phoenix and the three-time world champions T1. The schedule was listed, showing a two-group format.
You can watch the tournament on the LoL Esports website, from May 28th to May 31st.
