TSM has officially acquired Yiliang "Doublelift" Peng from Team Liquid. Concerns regarding conflicts of interest were brought up regarding the trade due to the Doublelift's history with TSM, but an LCS investigation led to the acquisition's approval when no conflicts of interest were discovered in the AD Carry's most recent move.
The move was first reported by ESPN Esports' Jacob Wolf. Team Liquid put Doublelift up for trade after a disappointing 9th place finish in the 2020 League of Legends Championship Series Spring Split. TL had won the past four splits consecutively.
TSM announced the signing on Sunday, April 26, only moments before the LCS tweeted an official statement regarding the acquisition by LCS Commissioner Chris Greeley. The full statement reads as follows:
“The League worked with TSM and Team Liquid to review the trade of Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng to ensure its compliance with the LCS ruleset. We conducted interviews of the relevant individuals as well as reviewed documents and communications in connection with the trade. We found no evidence of prohibited behavior and accordingly, we have approved the trade.”
Team Liquid still has a star-studded roster without Doublelift, and Team Liquid Academy AD Carry Edward "Tactical" Ra looks like the frontrunner for the starting position. When Doublelift was benched for motivational issues during the Spring Split, Tactical filled in and debuted at 2-1 in his first three LCS games, including TL's only 2-0 week of the split in week 7.
Doublelift joined TSM for the first time in his career ahead of the 2016 season. In 3 splits with Doublelift as the starting AD Carry, TSM won two of three NA LCS Finals it reached and qualified for both the 2016 and 2017 League of Legends World Championships.
