On the 10th (KST), Runaway announced the sponsorship of Asura, a team currently competing in Challengers Korea. Asura entered Challengers Korea in Spring 2019, but to no tangible success since their entry into the league. Currently, they’re competing in the 2020 Challengers Korea Spring, and sit at the last place in the standings with a 3-9 record.
Runaway, with their much success in Overwatch, has yet to grasp at the same success in the Korean League of Legends scene. They announced last Winter that they will be playing in the Challengers Korea Promotions Tournament, which is a tournament that any amateur team can enter for a spot in Challengers Korea. Although the roster for that tournament had many familiar faces, they failed to make it out of the preliminaries.
Through Runaway’s official Twitter, they announced that they closed a sponsorship deal with Asura, and the organization will fully take over Asura after the Spring split of Challengers Korea ends. Especially with Riot Korea’s recent announcement of franchising in the LCK, it’ll be curious to see whether or not Runaway will be able to make the long journey from the bottom of Challengers Korea to all the way into the LCK.
