DIG Huni: "We've been doing quite well with Soraka in practice, so the next level is probably Sona."

Dignitas snapped its losing streak against 100 Thieves to start Week 4 of the 2020 League of Legends Championship Series Spring Split. The team got off to a hot 3-0 start, but then lost as many games in succession as other teams in the LCS began to synergize. DIG went back to the drawing board and got creative to get itself out of its funk. Ornn was drafted for Mid Laner Henrik "Froggen" Hansen, and Heo "Huni" Seung-hoon threw the LCS a curveball by locking in the infamous top lane Soraka.

Dignitas' trust in innovation paid off, rallying around the Miss Fortune of rookie AD Carry Johnson "Johnsun" Nguyen for the team's fourth victory of the season. After besting 100 Thieves, Huni sat down with Inven Global's Nick Geracie to discuss the team's adjustments heading into Week 4, top lane mages, and DIG's identity amongst its LCS peers.

I'm joined by Dignitas Top Laner Huni. Dignitas snapped its losing streak today, so it's been three wins, then three losses, then a win today. Who is the real Dignitas?

It takes teams a while to figure actually figure out what's real about themselves, but I think what just happened in the past month is the real Dignitas. We're going to be a team that hasn't stabilized yet, and because of that, we can beat anyone, but we can lose to anyone. We should be able to adapt to what we know now to become more stabilized, and that's where we are as a team.

We're focusing on finding more consistency and just playing well in scrims. Earlier on in the year, our scrims were up and down too, and that started happening on stage [as well]. That's a pretty big deal, so our first goal is approaching this weakness and fixing it. Also, winning our first three games of the season is good, but the side effect was that it inflated our confidence and made us have a big ego.

When you win all of your games early on, it's harder to see your flaws right away, so it's good to hear you guys are adjusting your perspective. In regards to adapting to be a more consistent team, Dignitas drafted Soraka top and Ornn mid today, which are two picks not associated with yourself and Froggen, respectively. We've seen you play mages in the top lane before in previous seasons, so how are you feeling about playing Soraka top?

Yeah, I'm still not really sure if it's a good pick, but right now, the fact is that I don't know is why it's good. People actually don't know how to counter Soraka top yet exactly, and they don't know how to play around the Soraka, so I think that's a pretty big deal, for starters.

The second thing is that no one would expect the pick from us. There's a lot of teams banning Soraka, but no one expects Huni to play Soraka. 'He's not the type of person who's going to be satisfied with just throwing bananas and pressing Q and W over and over again etc,'  right? I think that expectation is key for me because if I can adapt to playing those types of champions, no one is going to be ready at all.

As far as things go with Soraka in the meta, I feel like the best strengths of the champion are not going to be strong enough for her to remain in the top tier of champions in the long-term. Teams are banning Soraka right now because they don't know what to play into it. If a team doesn't know how to beat it, they'd rather just ban it because they don't know anything about it. Or, if a team doesn't personally want to play it, they may just ban it for it to be a non-factor in the draft phase.

However, that then becomes the new key factor: which teams can play Soraka, and which teams cannot can affect the ban phase of draft greatly. Right now, I still don't know about Soraka, but I guarantee the power of the pick will slowly dwindle as people figure it out and become more familiar with it.

G2 Esports played Sona in the top lane today, which functions similarly to the funnel compositions of previous seasons. Have you been playing any of these other mage top laners in solo queue?

Yeah, that's why I pulled out Soraka! I've practiced a lot of Soraka, and it seemed like good stuff. We've been doing quite well with Soraka in practice, so the next level is probably Sona.

It was nice to also see the team try new strategies to snap a losing streak instead of defaulting to comfort picks. Do you think that was an integral part of actually ending the losing streak?

Right now, people in the LCS are playing the same thing over and over again. I can see a draft phase and predict certain players' picks before they happen. There are a lot of teams like that. Today, we banned Aatrox because the biggest weakness of LCS teams is that the respective champion pools are very easily abused.

I think being creative is an easier way to win because teams won't be able to expect what we are going to do. That's a pretty big factor, and it's evident in how it affects the draft phase. Right now, people are still banning Lucian, Rumble, and Gangplank against me even though I haven't even played them this season, because they know I can play them whenever I want. That's a pretty big deal, you know?

In terms of your win today, do you think your improved form compared to your previous three games was more due to an understanding of your composition, or simply better play from the team all-around?

I think it's a combination of factors, but the main thing is that we now understand where we are as a team. Since we lost three games in a row, we slowly had to rebuild from the ground up again. We had to remember that we also won three games in a row, and if we do the right things, we're capable of anything.

We have the capability of winning every single time, so we had to go back to what we were doing correctly in the past month and return to building upon that. As soon as we won three games in a row, we stopped doing that. We got lazy. That's what we figured out in practice, and we tried to focus on our weaknesses more than we were previously. Before, we didn't have to, because we were winning.

It's not that we are getting worse, other teams are getting better. As soon as we lost those three games, we knew we had to fix some things to improve at the rate of other teams. In doing so, we found our weaknesses, and there was a lot we needed to improve upon. Even still, I don't think we've shown our 100% form. That's why we're focusing on trying to make our scrim performances translate perfectly on stage. It should be exactly the same.

Dignitas may need to work on its consistency, but the fact that you guys have the potential to beat anyone must be pretty exciting to your fans. Is there anything you want to say to them?

Yeah, this is just what it is in terms of Dignitas, you guys. We're able to beat anyone, but able to lose to anyone, so...it's going to be pretty fun to watch! *laughs* That's where we're at right now, so we're trying to stabilize the team as much as we can and become more consistent. Hopefully, we can beat C9 next time...I want to take back 1st place.

In a perfect world, I wish I could play every single game on stage. Practice; solo queue; I would like to just be here than anywhere else and play here every single day. The stage is where my passion is.
