Nintendo held a press conference this evening in Japan to share news and details about the Super Nintendo World. The theme park features Nintendo characters, and will open this Summer at Universal Studios Japan, just in time for the Summer 2020 Olympic Games.
Super Nintendo World’s announcement was presented in the form of a music video performed by Galantis and Charli XCX - “We Are Born to Play”, as visitors storm through a digitial version of what the park may look like.
The presentation had little information about the rides that will be present in the Super Nintendo Land, but the announcement video shows a replica of Mario Kart and a top down version of the land. Viewers can get a good idea of how big the park will be, and which levels will be features, including the Bowser Castle and Yoshi’s land.
“Think of Super Nintendo World as a life-size, living video game where you become one of the characters [...] You’re not just playing the game; you’re living the game, you’re living the adventure. Nintendo’s most iconic locations and experiences will be brought to life, including Mushroom Kingdom, Peach’s Castle, an incredible Mario Kart ride, Bowser’s Castle – and more.” said Thierry Coup, senior vice president and chief creative officer of Universal Creative.
The biggest news of the night were wristbands called “The Power Up Band”, which accompanies an app that allows guests to have interactive experiences in the Super Nintendo World. The technology is similar to the one Universal Studios uses for their interactive wants in the Harry Potter themed areas of their parks. Bands will allow guests to gamify their visits, collecting coins and competing with other guests. Did we mention coins get you character items and stamps?
The Universal Studios Japan app can be downloaded in smartphones and linked to a Power UP Band, that can be purchased at the Super Nintendo World. The wristbands are available in different color schemes resembling Nintendo characters like Yoshi, Princess Peach, Mario, Luigi, Princess Daisy and Toad.
Super Nintendo World will be exclusive to Japan at first, but will open at the Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Singapore in the future.
