José Roberto "Sparda" do Nascimento Junior has become an important figure in the Brazilian LoL Esports scene due to a quite unusual motive. The RED Canids streamer has previously revealed that the reason behind his League of Legends gameplay streaming was to raise funds for his little sister's plasmapheresis treatment.
Sparda's 8 year old sister suffers from the Guillain-Barre Syndrome, in which this uncurable disease attacks the person's immune and nervous system, and acute myelitis, that causes inflammation and damages to the spinal cord, preventing the transmission of its nerve impulses, which can lead to severe pain and possibly paralysis. The crowdfunding campaign was almost completely funded.
RED Canids had first heard of the rookie through their super star streamer YoDa. According to CEO Felippe Corradini, the team had initially thought of making a contribution to the crowdfunding campaign, but after the team watched Sparda's broadcast, they decided to sign him under the brand, with a Facebook Gaming contract, starting in March of 2019.
"Unfortunately, Sparda is going through such a complicated sitution and we wanted to help him from the very first moment. However, after I brought up the idea to João Paulo Garcia, we analyzed the situation and decided to make his dream of becoming a professional League of Legends player true. Now he will be able to make a living this way, his future now only relies on him to remain in this path", said Corradini.
Later in the year, José Roberto started a campaign to fund a life saving surgery for his mother. The procedure needs a special kind of equipment, due to the location of the tumor. According to Sparda, the surgery would not able to be performed safely by Brazil's public health system due to their lack of equipment and long wait lists. The surgery will cost R$ 150,000, which is about $37,100. The crowdfunding campaign has reached $48,404 as of today, and the family has about two months to reach its goal. The Tweet reads: "Like I have mentioned before, the surgery's discount happens only in March, so we have to pay the full price to make sure it is done as soon as possible. I know it is nearly impossible to reach the goal until the 5th, but maybe a miracle will happen"
Things are looking up to Sparda's future, as he grows in the community an his voice allows him to quite literally save lives. The player mentioned that he wanted to close 2019 with his Twitch Verification, his sister's treatment funded and his mother's brain surgery funded.
