Move over Nintendo! Another game developer is creating their own theme park. This time, it's Ubisoft.
Ubisoft first announced this plan back in 2015. The theme park was set to open in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2020. Now, Ubisoft has paired with Storyland Studios, a design and production firm, to create two virtual reality games for in-person experiences.
The two games are called "Assassin's Creed: Escape the Lost Pyramid" and "Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time."
According to Ubisoft Entertainment Manager Mathilde Bresson, video games and theme parks have a lot of similarities that Ubisoft is hoping to explore. He said Storyland will help explore the potential for immersive, innovative, and "unforgettable" experiences based on Ubisoft's games.
"Ubisoft’s stories and characters are iconic and globally recognizable. The settings within Ubisoft’s game worlds are a perfect tapestry for physical world creation," Storyland Studios Chief Strategy Officer Ben Thompson said.
Ubisoft originally announced its theme park plans in September 2015. In their official press release on the matter, Ubisoft called it a "next-generation theme park" that would have highly interactive gaming experiences. The project was led by Ubisoft Motion Pictures, who launched Rabbids Dark Ride at a French park called Futuroscope.
"We are creating a place where every guest is a player, every ride is a playground, every visit is a game," said Ubisoft Motion Pictures Senior Vice President Jean de Rivieres.
The theme park was planned to be 10,000 square feet. It would be located "in the heart" of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the second-most visited country in Asia at the time. It would feature rides, attractions, and shows inspired by Ubisoft's franchises, including Assassin's Creed, Just Dance, and Rabbids.
The two in-person gaming experiences are the first step in Ubisoft's pursuit of a theme park. But not much else has been announced or explained thus far. For now, grab some mushroom popcorn at Nintendo World and see if Ubisoft's plans finally unfold.
