Riot Games Korea and the Cultural Heritage Administration on Thursday unveiled faithful reproductions of nine Joseon royal paintings and calligraphy works at the National Palace Museum of Korea in Jongno‑gu. The replicas, completed in 2024, stem from a replication initiative funded by Riot Games beginning in 2023 under a 2022 sponsorship agreement.

In 2023, Riot Games allocated support to three replication efforts. The first recreated the Chaekgado folding screen, a ten‑panel work showing stacks of books that symbolize the Joseon royal family’s devotion to scholarship. The second produced an eight‑panel Jongmyo Chinje Gyuje Do‑seol folding screen depicting Jongmyo Shrine’s main buildings, ritual procedures and ceremonial table settings from King Gojong’s reign. The third effort reproduced Bosodang Injon, six small, wood‑bound volumes from the late Joseon period that compile the seals once housed in the royal Bosodang hall.

Since August 2023, experts from the Cultural Heritage Administration have combined scholarly research, scientific analysis, high‑resolution imaging and digital technologies with traditional documentation to ensure accuracy. The completed replicas are set to debut at the National Palace Museum before touring regional cultural centers later this year.

Riot Games first entered into a cultural‑heritage sponsorship agreement in 2012 and has since backed seven preservation and repatriation projects. These have ranged from the 2014 Tripitaka Koreana Spirit‑Born Buddha Triad to last year’s Gyeongbokgung Seonwonjeon Inscription, as well as conservation of the Washington‑based Korean Empire Legation and treatment of 15 Joseon dynasty royal garments.

The project lead at the Cultural Heritage Technology Institute noted that replication projects safeguard originals by reducing handling and also preserve intangible crafts such as weaving, dyeing, mounting and lacquer work. Observers say the 2024 completions represent a milestone in private‑public collaboration, blending modern imaging with artisanal reproduction techniques to carry heritage forward.

Riot Games Korea’s representative emphasized that replication offers a sustainable path to protect fragile cultural assets and pledged to continue efforts that highlight their value and ensure their endurance for future generations.
