Finnish independent studio Gloomsoft announced today that its upcoming title Moadra will offer a fully playable demo during Steam Next Fest from Feb. 24 to Mar. 3. The dark sci‑fi Metroidvania game is set on the star planet Protea VI, where players control Lieutenant Moadra Meras, a member of the Neera unit assigned to investigate the disappearance of a lost expedition. The game’s environments range from sandy plains and icy peaks to underground lakes and abandoned research facilities, each presenting its own set of challenges and hazards.

In Moadra, players can utilize various maneuvers, including rolling, dodging, wall jumping, and sprinting, to navigate the planet’s treacherous terrain. A scanner bot feature allows users to uncover hidden paths and areas, while a mutation system enables the absorption of enemy biomass to evolve abilities and weaponry. Gloomsoft stated that the demo will allow players to experience these core mechanics ahead of the game’s full release on Steam later this year.

The Metroidvania genre is known for its emphasis on exploration and non‐linear gameplay, with titles such as Hollow Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest setting a high standard for intricate level design and storytelling. More recent games like Dead Cells have further diversified the genre by incorporating fast-paced action and roguelike elements. Moadra enters this landscape with a focus on dark sci‑fi themes and survival mechanics, aiming to appeal to both seasoned fans and newcomers. Whether or not it can live up to the tremendous standards these other titles have set is to be determined.
