While sitting down with GameInformer for last week's installment of GI's rapid fire questions video series, Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan revealed which character in Overwatch and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate he'd like to see respectively crossover into the other's game.
Kaplan said that it would be a dream to see Link join the Overwatch cast. The Legend of Zelda series protagonists is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time alongside fellow Shigeru Miyamoto creation Super Mario, and has crossed into other games outside of his endemic series and the Smash universe in the Nintendo Gamecube exclusive character for Soulcalibur II in 2002.
In September 2019, Moon Studios VFX artist Etienne POV created a 'trailer' for if Link was hypothetically introduced into the Overwatch, complete with updates to his aesthetic and augmentations that would serve him well against the OW cast.
For the other side of the crossover, Kaplan said that Tracer would be the first character he would choose to crossover to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The unofficial posterchild of the Overwatch universe's high mobility and dynamic kit would transfer well into the SSBU; the current roster already features over 80 fighters for players to choose.
Earlier this year, a request for a playable version of Dragonball protagonist Son Goku gained traction in the Super Smash. Bros. Ultimate community. Director Masahiro Sakurai stated in response that while video game crossovers can and have happened in the past few Smash installments, no anime characters or other types of crossovers with other forms of media are planned to be included at this time.
Still, Link's previous crossover experience in Soul Calibur and Nintendo's expansion of the Smash universe to include SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog, Metal Gear Solid protagonist Solid Snake, and Ryu from Capcom's Street Fighter series could point towards the possibility of an Overwatch collaboration in the future. Should Nintendo also want to participate and bring Link to the OW roster, Etienne POV has created a fantastic road map to do just that.
