Splyce defeated Unicorns of Love 3-2 Tuesday evening in the Play-In Knockout Stage, and punched its ticket to the main event of the 2019 League of Legends World Championship. The last time Splyce participated in a Worlds Group Stage was after qualifying into Group D of Worlds 2016, which was before the creation of the Play-In portion of the tournament format.
In a post-match interview with Tamás "Vizicsacsi" Kiss, Laure "Bulii" Valée pressed the Splyce Top Laner about the team's narrow victory over UoL in a series that was predicted to be very one-sided. "I agree that it definitely should have been easier," Vizicsacsi admitted. "We messed up in the first match; we definitely had a lot of chances to win there. It could have looked cleaner, but I'm just happy that we've won."
When asked if playing against his former team Unicorns of Love was a factor for him coming into the series, Vizicsacsi admitted that it did change the atmosphere of the situation for him. "I didn't want to get too emotionally involved, because I would have played more aggro or not be as calculated," Vizicsacsi explained. "So in the game, I tried to calm down and focus my forcefulness into my calls."
Splyce has its work cut out for it if the team wants to succeed in Group B. The #3 LEC seed joins #1 LPL seed FunPlus PhoeniX, #1 VCS seed GAM Esports, and #2 LMS seed J Team, all of whom will put up much more of a fight than UoL.
Throughout the majority of the 2019 LEC Summer Split, Splyce was just behind Fnatic in terms of ability and solidified itself as a top 3 team in Europe. Whether it will be able to reclaim that form before the Group Stage will be a crucial factor in the rest of Splyce's Worlds 2019. Splyce plays its first Group B Match on Saturday, October 12 against GAM Esports in Berlin, Germany at approximately 19:00 local time.
