Turkish representative Royal Youth is heading to the Play-In Knockout Stage. Facing elimination at a record of 0-3, the TCL champion beat back Brazil's Flamengo eSports to force a tiebreaker before beating the CBLoL champion again to stay alive in the next stage of the 2019 World Championship as Group D's 2nd Seed.
Royal Youth came into day 4 of the Play-In Group Stage sitting at 0-2 and started the day off by being wallopped by DAMWON Gaming. However, in a post-game interview at the conclusion of the tiebreaker, RYL Support Barış "Tolerant" Çepnioğlu told Laure Valée that the match against the South Korean side was helpful to Royal Youth in its match against Flamengo and subsequent tiebreaker rematch.
"The loss to DAMWON Gaming motivated us a lot because we played well against them in the early game, and it proved that we can go up against the best teams in the world," Tolerant explained.
It's hard to argue with Tolerant's perspective when Royal Youth didn't win a single game in the group until its second shellacking courtesy of DWG, but the wins certainly came at the right time for the Turkish squad. When asked who he would like to face amongst the #1 Play-In Seeds, Tolerant wished for a slice of apple pie on his plate for the Knockout Stage:
"Unicorns of Love is a 2nd Seed...so I'd say Clutch. We've scrimmed against them, though I think to be ready for them we have to improve on our communication. Our early game is pretty good, so if we snowball our early advantagers harder than we did in Group D, we can win."
Tolerant's wish would be granted mere minutes later when Royal Youth was randomly selected as Clutch Gaming's opponent in the Knockout Stage. CG did not have the cleanest start to Worlds 2019, but the RYL members still have their work cut out for them when facing the LCS representative in a best-of-5 match.
