Griffin Sword: "I thought a Sword vs Sword meta will come someday... I did my best to prepare, but apparently, it wasn’t enough."

On March 21st (KST), in the first match of 2019 LCK Spring Split Day 38, Griffin defeated Hanwha Life Esports 2-0. The performance and results were perfect for Griffin. Through today’s win, Griffin climbed out of the losing streak. After the match, Choi “Sword” Seong-won was interviewed.

The following is an interview with Sword.

You stopped the losing streak. How do you feel?

I feel really good because we were able to stop the losing streak.

How was the feedback during the losing streak?

I had issues with confidence. There were champions that I had practiced but hadn’t played in competitions. I personally felt pressured, maybe I was nervous. Now, I’m overcoming it with the help of my teammates and their words of encouragement.

What did you focus on preparing the matchup against Thal?

I just thought ‘I’ll just do my share’. Since my performance in recent matches hasn’t been very good, I just tried to stick to the basics. All I thought was that we would win if I’m good enough.

You must have been stressed.

Yes. I’m really thankful to my teammates for encouraging me. My mind felt a lot easier since there were so many people that supported me and cheered me up.

Thal played Yorick in both games; he even blind-picked Yorick in Game 1. What did you think about that?

I didn’t expect him to blind pick him. I think we improvised and dealt well with it. Originally, I thought they might ban Yorick to reduce my champion pool. To come to think of it, by picking Yorick first, their intention was to reduce my choices.

You’re not far from heading straight to the finals. How will you prepare for the remaining matches?

Our head coach cvMax recently said that it’s alright to lose. He just told us to play the game we’ve always played, and that if we concentrate on our roles fully, wins will follow naturally. I’ll keep that in mind in the remaining games.

Many people pointed out that top lane was the problem during the losing streak.

Personally, I agree. Since it was leaking from where I stood, the whole team became shaky. So for today’s match, I just thought to play as I always did, just doing my share.

Some say that you’re struggling to adapt to the meta.

That was an issue that I was concerned about from the beginning. The meta goes round and round; I thought a Sword vs Sword meta will come someday [in top lane]. I did think that could be an issue for me. I did my best to prepare for that, but apparently, it wasn’t enough. I will be putting in more effort.

The reason I played Jax and Jayce today was to be more aggressive through my picks. I’ll play with more confidence in the future. I have faith in myself.

Any last comments?

I lost a lot of confidence and wasn’t able to deliver the performance that people expected of me. I’m so thankful to the fans who cheer for me even so. It’s really a big help; I think I’ll be able to recover because of all the support from the fans.
