Coach KyKy vindicated: Jake's Doomfist and Arhan's Genji swap at Texas Showdown

The competitive Overwatch community has an interesting relationship with Coach KyKy. Formerly working for Dallas Fuel (and blamed for many of the team's downfalls), KyKy has moved over to the Houston Outlaws where perhaps unsurprisingly, things are going better.

First off, let's acknowledge there's more than one coach with the Houston Outlaws and that TaiRong still remains the head coach.  That being said, when watching Wednesday's Texas Showdown featuring Outlaws vs. Fuel, one can't help but notice KyKy's strong influence on the team, especially regarding various hero choices.

But before we start, we should note there's plenty to dissect in regards to Dallas Fuel's gameplay, some more obvious than others. For example, Redditor JohnGalt makes a strong case that Mickie's Zarya underperformed and did not synergize properly with OGE when compared to Muma and Spree.

His theory of game one holds weight, as we also saw miscommunications on Lijiang.

These errors ultimately cost Dallas the map.

And of course, there's a fatal error of Dallas failing to push the cart as they won their first team fight on Dorado.

OWL matches will always be decided by a mistake, but Dallas made many of them. Perhaps this is why the things Houston did right this week seemed so effective.

Speaking of things Houston did right, before the game began Arhan was on Doomfist; ready to swap based on his team's scouting.

The swap paid off as Arhan's subsequent Dragonblade pulled a 4k to stop Dallas's push.

This swap is what would ultimately win Houston the set.  You can see that Mickie swapped to Brigitte at this point, but it's too late.

Coach KyKy is known for championing experimental hero picks and we saw that influence on King's Row.  On Houston's final defense, Jake swaps to Bastion and it's enough to kill Reinhardt and melt D.Va.

This is the same coach that was criticized for running Bastion when he was coaching for Dallas Fuel!

And when Houston is on the attack, Jake's swap from Junkrat to Doomfist is what allowed them to win two team fights and ultimately win the map.  Maybe Jake has always had a pocket Doomfist, but I think it is KyKy's influence on Outlaws that encouraged the confident pick.

In closing, there's a lot of factors at work that gave Outlaws the edge over Fuel this week.  But in regards to Coach KyKy, it comes down to this:

Yes, he doesn't deserve all the credit for Houston's win. Just as he never deserved all the blame when he was with Dallas.
