Blizzard Entertainment announced its intention to overhaul Overwatch's Symmetra.
Through a video released on November 22th, Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan revealed some key details of the company's new design for the support hero. Symmetra will receive a new ultimate, Shield Generator, without losing access to Teleporter, her previous ultimate. She will thus become the first Overwatch hero with two ultimate abilities.
Until now, Symmetra has been perceived as an overly situational pick. She was incredibly good at stalling Objective A on Defence, but apart from that particular scenario, could not offer much else to her team. This lack of versatility seems to have been the most important factor for her redesign.
Shield Generator, Symmetra's new ultimate, will grant all of her team a regenerating shield akin to the one from her current Photon Shield (E). In turn, Photon Shield will be replaced by another ability: Photon Barrier. Photon Barrier will create a shield that blocks enemy projectiles, as Reinhardt's and Winston's do, but will also move along a trajectory in the way a projectile would.
Other changes include an increase in Photon Projector's initial lock-on range, and a reduction on how long it takes to install or relocate Sentry Turrets.
All of these changes to Symmetra will soon be applied to the PTR, as will Oasis, an entirely new map that had been announced at BlizzCon 2016. Oasis is projected to hit live in early 2017.
Kaplan signed off by saying, "We are super excited to see what you guys do with the new Symmetra, and eventually how you guys play the new map Oasis. As always, we're looking forward to your feedback. You guys really are the ones steering the direction of this game. We hope you enjoy it and have great time with it."
