On August 7th (KST), ROX Gaming announced the signing of the iconic Tekken player Jaemin “Knee” Bae. The organization is most famously known for its League of Legends team, ROX Tigers, and this move marks the third Korean Tekken pro signing followed by Echo Fox’s Jinwoo “Saint” Choi and HyunJin “JDCR” Kim last February.
“We were impressed with Knee’s consistent level of play and his ability to perform at the highest level for over a decade now. With the Tekken World Tour being announced this year, it was a no brainer to pick him up to represent our organization. His personality, skill level, and class all align with the ideals that ROX instills in its players and teams,” said Eliot Namgung, director of esports for ROX Gaming in the press release.
Since picking up Tekken 1 in elementary school, Knee is often heralded as “the greatest Tekken player of all-time”. Though Knee was recently eliminated from Tekken World Tour Korea by Wecka in pool play, he currently ranks second in TWT points for the Asia-Pacific region and placed third in Evo 2017.
It remains to be seen whether other Korean esports teams will follow suit, especially since the region boasts numerous talents who are eager to play professionally in Konami’s big esports push, TWT with $200,000 in prize money.
