Earlier this week, Walt Disney Co. revealed 11 companies that will participate in the 2017 Disney Accelerator, a start-up incubator program. Among the participants are aXiomatic, an esports investment firm with a majority stake in Team Liquid, and Epic Games, the creator of Unreal Engine, Gears of War and Paragon, their most recent MOBA title. It’s worth noting that the Disney Accelerator this year include start-ups specifically related to esports and video games, in addition to the usual ones in robotics and entertainment.
During the program’s three-month period, the Disney Accelerator will provide its participants with investment, access to Disney’s creative campus and mentorship from top Disney executives, entrepreneurs and business leaders in the entertainment and technology.
Launched in 2014, Disney’s own start-up incubator has produced good results for the media giant. For instance, Sphero, a digital toy maker, has released the widely popular BB-8 App-enabled Droid toy in 2015, while Atom Tickets developed a movie ticketing app to bring ticketing and merchandise sales for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016.
