Krafton Targets Europe with Dark and Darker Mobile and inZOI

Krafton, on August 21, 2024, in Cologne, Germany, held a global media showcase at Gamescom 2024, Europe’s largest gaming convention, to highlight its vision for the future, focusing on PUBG: Battlegrounds, Dark and Darker Mobile, and inZOI.

The event opened with a video chronicling the seven-year journey of PUBG, a game that has been pivotal to Krafton's success. The video featured a message from PUBG's production director, Kim Taehyun, who reflected on the game's evolution and hinted at what’s next. "For seven years, PUBG has continuously introduced new content, expanding the IP's reach. Recently, we launched the 10th map, Rondo, and collaborated with Lamborghini. But this is just the beginning—we are currently working on a major update for the end of the year," Kim said. He emphasized Krafton’s commitment to keeping PUBG engaging and fun for players well into the future.

Following this, Ahn Joonseok, the executive producer of Dark and Darker Mobile, took the stage to discuss the game. Ahn described Dark and Darker Mobile as a unique experience that merges various genres—including extraction, battle royale, dungeon crawler, and RPG—into one cohesive game. He highlighted the challenges the development team faced, particularly in adapting the intricate combat mechanics of the extraction genre to the mobile platform without losing its essence. "It was a constant challenge to make complex combat intuitive on a touch interface and to optimize the game across different platforms," Ahn explained. "Ultimately, the solution was simple: we just kept refining and testing over and over again."

Ahn also emphasized the attention to detail that went into the game’s visual and auditory quality despite being a mobile game. "Using Unreal Engine 5.2, we focused on dynamic lighting, detailed character modeling, and realistic movements to create a deeply immersive experience in the game’s dark atmosphere," he said. Ahn added that significant effort was put into sound design, ensuring that elements like footsteps, breathing, and the crackling of torches enhance the player’s immersion.

Concluding his presentation, Ahn described Dark and Darker Mobile as a "console experience in the palm of your hand." He elaborated, "Our goal is to deliver the kind of dynamic experience you’d expect from a console game, but on mobile. We've implemented a physics-based combat system where players must consider not just their opponents, but the environment as well. Swinging recklessly might cause your weapon to hit a wall and bounce off—something unprecedented in mobile games."

Dark and Darker Mobile will begin global pre-registration, announced during the Opening Night Live (ONL) event on August 20. Players can pre-register on both mobile and PC via Google Play Games. Those who pre-register will receive an A-grade mercenary and a limited edition costume skin upon the game's release.

The presentation then moved to Kim Hyungjun, the producer and director of inZOI, explaining the philosophy behind the game. "inZOI starts with the question, 'Are you living the life you desire?' It's a game that allows players to live out their ideal life, doing things they might not be able to in reality," Kim explained.

inZOI offers extensive customization options, allowing players to tailor everything from their character’s appearance—whether young or old—to decorating their homes and spaces. These creations can be shared through the user-generated content (UGC) platform, Canvas. Kim also discussed the integration of AI technology, particularly a 3D printer feature that allows users to turn images into 3D objects within the game. While still in development, the goal is to enable users to freely utilize this feature in the future.

Although inZOI is designed to let players live out their ideal lives, it also introduces unexpected events and challenges, mimicking the unpredictability of real life. "Just like in reality, where life isn't always smooth sailing, inZOI simulates a full community experience where unexpected moments and changes can occur," Kim said. For example, players might think they've gotten away with a secretive action, like stealing, only to find that rumors spread, leading to potential consequences, such as friends questioning them or even getting caught by the police. This aspect of the game is designed to offer a realistic and dynamic life experience.

Kim concluded by expressing his hopes for inZOI. "We want players to realize their dream lives while also exploring the diverse aspects of life through unexpected events and emotions. We hope inZOI becomes more than just a game—a unique experience that offers a deeper reflection on the meaning of life."

On the same day, Krafton released inZOI: Character Studio on Steam, a character customization build that received an enthusiastic response from the global gaming community.
