The LEC is returning to a live arena venue for the conclusion of the 2022 Summer Split. Europe's best will fight for glory in Sweden, in the Malmö Arena, on September 10 and September 11. The semi-final and subsequent grand final will directly determine the seeding of the LEC teams heading to the 2022 League of Legends World Championship
Head of League of Legends Esports EMEA, Maximilian Schmidt, stated, "We are absolutely thrilled to announce that we will be hosting our 2022 Summer Finals in Malmö, Sweden. Being the first roadshow we’ve hosted away from our Berlin studio in three years, we can’t wait to give the fans an unforgettable experience. We’re pleased to be working with the City of Malmö again and look forward to bringing the breathtaking atmosphere to their city.”
2019 was the last time the LEC held its largest event of the year in a similar venue as Athens, Greece, hosted the clash between G2 and Fnatic in the grand final. For 2020, the LEC did have plans to do a roadshow again for both the Spring Split and Summer Split finals, but those plans were shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 finals of both Splits, also between G2 and Fnatic, were played from home. In 2021, the LEC let the finalists — MAD Lions and Rogue in Spring, and MAD Lions and Fnatic in Summer — play from the studio in Berlin, but without any fans present.
The 2022 Spring Split finals promised a slow return to normalcy, as G2 and Rogue were allowed to battle for the trophy in front of a small crowd in the Berlin studio. That positive trend continued in the Summer Split, when the LEC announced that an audience would be welcome in the studio again on all match days of the Split.
Malmö's arena can hold up to 15,500 fans for concents, or just over 12k for sports, but it isn't sure yet if the LEC will seek to fill that many seats. Ticket sales go live on July 1st on the Malmö Arena website.
