Rogue and Korean OW fans in tension over a picture of kimchi.
On April 29th (PDT), Rogue's Benjamin "uNKOE" Chevasson posted a tweet that led to several misunderstandings between Rogue and Korean Overwatch fans.
The controversy started when uNKOE posted a tweet during a meal with his teammates. He posted a picture of kimchi with a caption that said: "Disgusting".
Soon, the Korean Overwatch community erupted. They criticized uNKOE and even the entire Rogue roster for being culturally insensitive. Some even started to call Rogue players racists on social media, and became disruptive in Twitch streams.
In order to address the issue, Dylan "aKm" Bignet posted an explanation both in Korean and English. He explained that uNKOE's tweet was an inside joke among the teammates.
The explanation cleared up the said context, but it led to another misunderstanding. The Korean translation of the tweet explicitly states that aKm wants to apologize. The English translation, however, does not have that sentence. The difference turned into confusion when aKm made clear that his tweet was not meant to be an apology.
As a result, the debates are still ongoing in both communities. The Korean community is currently debating whether they were right to force an 'apology' over difference in taste. The western community is confused why an 'explanation' is being interpreted as an apology.
