Destiny 2 publisher Bungie has been applauded across social media for standing their ground against gamers who don't enjoy the company getting "political" on Twitter.
On May 3, Bungie shared a tweet standing up for women's reproductive rights in light of a leaked Supreme Court decision to overturn the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision that protects the right to get an abortion.
"Standing up for reproductive choice and liberty is not a difficult decision to make, and Bungie remains dedicated to upholding these values," Bungie stated.
The tweet linked to a blog post outlining Bungie's feelings about the leaked draft. The company called it a "blow to freedom" as well as an attack on human rights. Bungie also stated that they felt there would be long-term consequences if the draft ends up passing.
Bungie's social media manager made it very clear what the company's stance on women's rights is, refusing to stay neutral. This didn't sit right with some gamers who felt that video game publishers should stay out of politics and stick to just making games. In response to this, Bungie said: "Never."
Bungie added that the company would "never stop" discussing politics, especially when it comes to decisions that will impact its employees and community. The company's decision to vocally fight back against critics had many gamers' respect.
No matter what opinion people had about the leaked court draft, the actual discussion came down to whether gaming companies should discuss politics at all. Most gamers felt that it was okay for Bungie to state their stance since there are "real people" behind the screen.
People choosing to voice their disagreement or choosing not to purchase games is a consequence of free speech, no matter which stance Bungie took. It's clear that Bungie were willing to take that risk and deal with the consequences of their decision to voice a political stance.
