On Jan 17, Gen.G faced off against DWG KIA on day 5 of the 2022 LCK Spring split. In a match many considered to be the Match of the Week, Gen.G earned themselves a hard-fought victory against the former world champions with a set score of 2-1. This match was unpredictable until the very end, as the series was neck to neck in every game; one final elder dragon teamfight was what sealed the deal for Gen.G in game 3.
After the match, the mid laner for Gen.G, Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon, sat down for a post-match interview.
Thoughts on the victory?
Although I played terribly, my teammates basically won the game for me, so I’m very happy that we won.
Can you tell us why you felt you played poorly?
There were a lot of mistakes that I shouldn’t have made. When I played Leblanc in game 1, I failed to properly chunk people and get out. It’s hard to explain every single mistake that I’ve made, but I’ve made lots of them in this series. Moving forward, I’ll have to diversify the ways I create variance in the game, and read my opponents more thoroughly.
The General Manager of Gen.G, Lee Ji-hoon, evaluated this year’s starting roster as the championship winning roster. Can you tell us why you decided to join Gen.G this year?
I weighed all my pros and cons of the offers I got, and I felt that playing with Gen.G was my best option. Every team had their pros and cons, but Gen.G offered the best possible options that outweighed the cons. If I went back in time to make my decision again, I’d still choose Gen.G.
In a recent interview with Heo “ShowMaker” Su, he said that you have a unique way of breaking down and figuring out the meta. Can you tell us what your process is like when figuring out the meta?
When I practice different champions, I like to make small changes to my runes, then find the pros and cons of each rune setting. In order to do so, I have to play a lot to create a database.
So far, Corki has dominated the mid lane meta not just in the LCK, but around the world as well. What can you tell me about the reason behind it, and are there any counterpicks to Corki?
The reason why he’s OP is because of how you can’t aggressively use teleport to influence other lanes. Once he gets safely out of the early game, he scales very hard into the late game and deals a lot of damage. There are a couple counterpicks that are ‘solo queue exclusive’, and those champions can make an appearance in the LCK anytime.
Lastly, any word to your fans?
I’m frankly embarrassed at how I played tonight. I’ll make sure to improve for my next matches.
