Legendary boxer Manny Pacquiao is entering esports, creating a new team called Team Pacquiao GG. After Pacquiao initially posted a teaser himself on Dec. 1, the team officially launched on Dec. 4 with more information about the new team.
Explained in a report by Esports Insider, Team Pacquiao GG will not start with any competitive rosters, but begin with charity and events small competitions to build the Southeast Asian scene. According to Cam Royal of Veloce, the goal for the venture is for them to become the Philippines' national team. The organization has also recruited major names in Filipino esports: Gian Lois ‘GLOCO’ Concepcion, Een Mercado, Kimberlee ‘superkimbie’ Arcillas, and Elyson ‘GHOST Wrecker’ Caranza.

"Team Pacquiao is the gaming and content creation brand of Manny Pacquiao, internationally renowned boxer, and eight-division world champion," the website states. "With the ambition to be the national team of the Philippines, Team Pacquiao has a core focus on community, competition, and content that desires to provide opportunity to the people within gaming and entertainment." Images on the website reveal Team Pacquiao GG's branding — jerseys emblazoned with their logo as well as the flag of the Philippines.
The investment could be a historic moment for Southeast Asian esports. The only eight-division world champion boxer in history, Pacquiao is the most popular athlete in the Phillippines and one of the most popular in the world. Since 2016, he has served as a senator of the Philippines.
His venture into esports is one of many such moves by popular athletes throughout the world. Previous investments have included David Beckham's investment in Guild Esports, as well as Gerard Pique and Ibai Llanos's founding of a new esports team, and Diogo Jota's creation of Diogo Jota Esports.
