EDward Gaming have defeated defending world champion DWG KIA to win the 2021 League of Legends World Championship. The League of Legends Pro League representative has returned the Summoner’s Cup back to China in a five-game epic to conclude Worlds 2021.
It was a classic battle between teams of the two strongest regions. With domination from DWG KIA throughout the tournament — never losing to any team not named T1 — as well as the disappointing performances of the LPL’s other teams, many were worried the finals would be one-sided. Both teams did well to provide a great finale to this year’s event.
Game 1 saw EDG quickly make a statement they were not to be taken lightly. DWG KIA had a bold draft — giving EDG Jhin and picking Yasuo into Graves for Kim "Khan" Dong-ha. The power-picks worked too well, as EDG soon pulled ahead and comfortably won the game. DWG KIA received the same meta-strong champions (Jhin and Graves) in game 2, and rapidly answered back with a 22-3 stomp — featuring a strong Malzahar game from Heo "ShowMaker" Su.
Game 3 was the closest match of the series. The teams stayed even for quite some time. However, the choice of Jayce for Li "Flandre" Xuan-Jun was ineffective, and the playmaking heroics of Kim "Canyon" Geon-bu on Lee Sin proved too much for EDG to handle, as DWG KIA won several critical fights in the late stages of the game.
With only nine kills throughout, there wasn’t much brawling in game 4, as the match was decided instead through the junglers. Zhao "Jiejie" Li-Jie overcame Canyon — winning several Smite fights to take the game. The match marked the first Jhin loss by an LCK team.
The series became the best Worlds finals in history after the action in game 5. Though EDG soon had a sizable advantage in the early stage of the game, DWG KIA did everything in their power to bring it back. Despite several brilliant moves from last year’s World Champions — objective victories, strong solo-kills, and even a Baron sneak — the superior teamfighting and vision control of EDG won in the end.
EDward Gaming are the third LPL team in four years to hoist the Summoner's Cup, which they will be bringing home to China with them for the first time since FunPlus Phoenix won it all at Worlds 2019. EDG mid laner Lee "Scout" Ye-chan was named the OPPO MVP for the 2021 Worlds finals.
