Twitch confirmed some hours after the story that a breach has indeed taken place and investigating the extent of it.

According to a report by Video Games Chronicle (VGC), a torrent file containing 125GB of Twitch data, including monthly content creator payouts from 2019 onwards, Twitch clients, proprietary services, and even an "unreleased Steam competitor, codenamed Vapor", has leaked via an anonymous hacker on 4chan. The hacker claims that his intention is to “foster more disruption and competition in the online video streaming space”, calling Twitch out on being a "disgusting toxic cesspool".

Inven Global is currently downloading the torrent file for verification, while users have already started posting excerpts from the data logs. According to the leaked data, top streamers are getting payouts in the hundreds of thousands a month. Felix "xQc" Lengyel tops the September 2021 list with $752,467 in pay-outs, followed by Jaryd Russell "Summit1g" Lazar at $362,987.

When it comes to years of payments, the numbers quickly get into the seven figures, and give an insight into how much content creators are earning on Twitch. Popular Dungeons and Dragons broadcast CriticalRole has been paid out $9.6M from August 2019 to October 2021. xQc himself has received over $8.4M for the same period. 

The story is developing, as the hacker says there's more information coming, so Twitch users are advised to change their log-in details, just out of precaution. Twitch has not issued a statement at the time of writing.
