Taylor Jeffrey Johnson, a 24-year old former PUBG professional who last competed in 2020, died earlier this week following a standoff with Pennsylvania State Police. Johnson took his own life as authorities closed in following a nearly five-hour pursuit after Johnson allegedly committed attempted homicide. His death came at the end of a pursuit that began on Wednesday, 25th August, in Pennsylvania, USA.
Reports suggest Johnson’s victim is a woman in her 20s, believed to be a former girlfriend, who he shot multiple times following a domestic dispute at a luxury apartment in Cary, North Carolina late night on Tuesday, 24th August, according to local sources. At the time of writing it is believed his victim is in a stable condition following the incident, while Johnson led police on a five-hour pursuit in a vehicle, and then on foot, before shooting and killing himself as police attempted to take him into custody.
The pursuit began around 2:30pm on Wednesday, 25th August, when police were notified of a vehicle traveling on Route 15 in Adams County in Pennsylvania. Johnson’s vehicle was disablded using ‘spike strips’, at which point he fled on foot, leading to the pursuit that ended with him taking his own life. There were no other injuries as a result of the pursuit, and Johnson died at the scene despite the best efforts of authorities responding to the incident.
Trooper Megan Ammerman was quoted in local press on the incident, clarifying the chain of events that led to the fatal conclusion. “We used spike strips to stop the vehicle. At that point the vehicle was stopped, and he exited his vehicle and ran into the woods,” Ammerman is quoted as saying in local21news. Ammerman says Johnson was armed with a weapon, with the police calling in helicopter support as their efforts to locate him intensified.
Johnson’s last events as a PUBG pro appear to have been at the back end of 2020, with his career spanning slightly more than two years and earning him around $17k in prize money. He represented a number of teams, with the best-known being eUnited, during his time as a professional player in that game.
