The Overwatch community has been devastated over the murder of Christiane Louise, a Brazilian voice actress who is known for her role as Mercy.
Overwatch fans found out about the 49-year-old's death on August 6 when fellow voice actor Mario Tupinamba Filho revealed the sad news on Instagram. He said he would love her forever in a heartbreaking caption on the social media platform.
Now, a man has been arrested for Louise's murder — and it may have been someone the Mercy actress knew. Pedro Paulo Goncalves Vasconcellos de Costa, 27, was arrested on August 13 by Brazilian homicide detectives. He was accused of murdering Louise on July 22 when she was stabbed multiple times in her apartment.
According to Brazilian news reports, Louise had been letting Paulo live with her for a few weeks. Louise and Paulo had met in a psychiatric clinic and became friends. During an alleged mental crisis, Louise had let Paulo stay with her.
Paulo initially told police that the murder was an act of self-defense, but police believe Paulo was after Louise's possessions. He had stolen a few of Louise's personal items, including a computer and multiple phones. With help from his mother, Paulo hid Louise's body for two days as they continued to live out their lives as normal.
This was revealed after Paulo attempted to tell lead investigator Leandro Costa that he hadn't talked to the victim since June 17. Paulo claimed that Louise had traveled to Mangaratiba with her boyfriend and would be gone for 15 days. This story didn't seem to hold any weight with the police, who later arrested Paulo and got the full story.
Paulo's mother, Eliane Goncalves Vasconcellos de Costa, is still at large.
Louise has been a beloved voice actor since 1994. Her long career has included voicing Mercy in Overwatch, Cortana in Halo, Sivir in League of Legends, and Bayonetta. With such a long and impressive history in the gaming industry, the community has continued to make tributes for Louise and share their favorite memories of Louise's career.
Twitter and Facebook have overflowed with fans saying "heroes never die" in Louise's honor.
