For its final match of the 2021 League Championship Series Summer Split, 100 Thieves will start the entirety of 100 Thieves Academy. The organization made the announcement via Twitter following its penultimate game of the split, which was a win against Golden Guardians.
The stakes could not be lower for 100 Thieves. TSM is locked into 1st place, but the trio of Cloud9, Evil Geniuses, and Team Liquid cannot finish higher than 3rd. As a result, 100 Thieves gets to rest its players before the 2021 LCS Championship while simultaneously giving its Academy team, which has been one of the top squads at its own level of competition throughout the year, some LCS experienced.
100 Thieves Academy support Philippe "Poome" Lavoie-Giguere and mid laner Tommy "ry0ma" Le have played for the organization in the LCS before, but the match will be the LCS debut of the other three players on the roster.
As with other times an organization has started its Academy roster in a low-stakes LCS match, the choice by 100 Thieves has come under scrutiny by some, but the team having 2nd place locked up in the LCS Summer Split allows its starters to rest for even longer than the first week bye, which TSM will also get as a top 2 team.
In addition, one could argue that with the LCS experience and relative talent on the 100 Thieves Academy roster, the squad could make the matchup against Evil Geniuses competitive despite a clear disadvantage in terms of raw power.
100 Thieves Academy finished 3rd in both the LCS Academy League Summer Split and the LCS Spring Proving Grounds this season, and with the majority of the 100 Thieves Academy players being developed into Academy talent on the organization's amateur squad 100 Thieves Next, giving these young players a chance is right in line what 100 Thieves' organizational approach in the LCS for the past calendar year.
