Team Liquid benching Barney "Alphari" Morris has been a pretty hot topic in the League of Legends community.
At first, the benching seemed out of nowhere. Head coach Joshua "Jatt" Leesman then said the decision was based on "multiple factors" and not just Alphari's gameplay. Jatt said that "nothing crazy happened" to lead to Alphari's benching.
As fans continued to question Team Liquid's decision, Alphari made a subtweet about the benching.
Doublelift shares opinion on Team Liquid benching Alphari
Former Team Liquid veteran Yiliang "Doublelift" Peng was quite vocal about Team Liquid's decision to bench Alphari. He tweeted about Alphari's performance during the spring split, revealing that the top lane was number one in North America for K/DA, kills, CSM, DPM, and solo kills.
"Team Liquid should play him or they are running it down for summer split," Doublelift tweeted.
Doublelift is no stranger to loudly disagreeing with Team Liquid's decisions. When Doublelift was playing for the popular League of Legends team, he made it known that he was frustrated with the team's idea to drop Jake "Xmithie" Puchero for Mads "Broxah" Brock-Pedersen. He said that this roster move is what made him "lose motivation" during that fateful 2020 season.
Already frustrated, Doublelift began to resent his team when the players would go to the coach to complain about him instead of coming to him directly. Since Doublelift wasn't getting feedback directly, the benching during that season felt sudden to the star player. He started to "walk on eggshells," afraid to get benched again if he didn't get along with his teammates.
"It's just a mess. An absolute mess. We did not do well the rest of the split. We did not look good," Doublelift said at the time.
He ended up leaving Team Liquid, admitting that it felt as though he wanted to play with a team who didn't want him there. Doublelift didn't want to feel "haunted by a mistake."
Even though Doublelift had deleted an interview at that time in an attempt to not further badmouth his team, the opinionated player is no longer playing for Team Liquid. That's most likely why he felt confident enough to call them out for benching Alphari.
Team Liquid has only won one of three matches during the summer split so far. New starting top lane Thomas "Jenkins" Tran definitely proved himself in his two matches, although he has average kill participation and is much lower than average in some of his other stats.
Team Liquid will be facing Dignitas, Evil Geniuses, and Immortals this weekend. Fans are concerned how the squad will perform now that Alphari is benched.
It's still unclear what led Team Liquid to this decision but it most likely wasn't about his performance. As Doublelift pointed out, Alphari was definitely dominating in the spring split. But the internal reasoning behind the situation has not been revealed.
