Fresh off of a very successful Smash World Tour NA qualifiers victory, Gavin "Tweek" Dempsey is serving up some spicy tier list opinions based on his experiences with 11.0.1.
Along with a few other Smash pros — including Armada —Tweek discussed his current Smash fighter rankings on his podcast, Tweek Talks. While some of it was not really all too surprising, like Joker and Pikachu being S-plus tier, a lot of Smash players were shocked to see Sephiroth in S-tier as well.
Sephiroth came out last year to a lot of fanfare. But while the Final Fantasy villain is popular, most trusted tier lists have put the swordie at about a B-tier ranking. But this didn't deter Tweek from heavily playing Sephiroth, who became one of Tweek's favorite fighters.
After putting Sephiroth as the fifth-best fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tweek made a few more surprising adjustments. Peach and Wario were moved down to A-tier due to a few bad matchups that don't favor these Nintendo fighters.
Tweek also moved Sonic up to S-tier. The blue hedgehog is often placed in B-tier, but the Wolf and Pokemon Trainer player said on his podcast that Sonic has the "best win condition in the game." Tweek explained that once Sonic has the lead on an opponent, Sonic players can simply just run around and hold onto the win since most opponents can't chase him down.
Tweek tier list placement explained
On his podcast, Tweek admitted that his tier list is based on "how he feels" instead of a very detailed list of requirements. The top tiers are based on "tournament outcomes," his cast of Smash guests said. The top fighters are all about "consistency." While a good player can do well in a tournament with their low-tier mains, that's a stand-out to the norm.
"Sephiroth is a hot take. Opinions on him are all over the place. It's so hard. I just have to wait for offline. Pyra & Mythra, I'm not sure. I value the character a lot. Mythra is just way too good. I think the character is ridiculously easy to play. That might be another hot take," Tweek said, putting Pyra & Mythra in top-tier. Still, he needs more offline data.
Pac-Man is "broken," Tweek noted, putting him in S-tier as well. He said it was "crazy" to see him in S-tier since Pac-Man was "similar" in Smash 4 but was "not the greatest." But with insane frame data and great confirms, Pac-Man currently has no weaknesses, Tweek said.
Sheik was another hot take. But Tweek is "way too fast" with "ridiculous confirms," he said. Tweek admitted he "hates" Sheik because the fighter has a lot of room for error.
Tweek said that S-tier is all about flexibility. Snake and R.O.B. weren't flexible enough — maybe borderline — but Tweek considered them pretty scrappy so put them there anyway. Inkling was not S-tier anymore, Tweek said, due to his decision to "bend to other people's wills." This was a placement that surprised many of Tweek's fans.
On the other end, Tweek put Little Mac in C-tier since he is the easiest character to counter-play in the whole game. While some people think Little Mac and other fighters are good, they often have glaring weaknesses, especially online.
"Little Mac just has the clearest weakness of every character in Smash history. It's up to you to deal with it. Whether you have the mental stamina to deal with it is another story," Tweek said.
