MAD Lions has defeated G2 Esports in the 2021 League of Legends European Championship Spring Playoffs. In a 3-1 victory, MAD will move on to the finals as the only undefeated team in the tournament, while G2 will have to survive the lower bracket with FC Schalke 04 Esports and Rogue.
This is the first time MAD Lions has qualified for a LEC final, but the second time the young organization has knocked G2 out of the upper bracket of a post-season tournament. In the 2020 LEC Spring Playoffs, MAD shocked Europe by defeating G2 in the first round before G2 ran the entire lower bracket to win the tournament.
Throughout the series, MAD Lions outclassed G2 Esports in nearly every teamfight, taking several strong engages in its trademark style on the back of phenomenal playmaking from support Norman "Kaiser" Kaiser. G2 began the series by trying to continue its success from its last series win against Schalke 04 that featured Martin "Rekkles" Larsson on Seraphine instead of his traditional marksman carries, but on Karma, the same strategy fell flat against the aggressiveness of MAD Lions.
G2 Esports mid laner Rasmus "Caps" Winther did the most he could to pull his weight, but despite having compositions built around him on Tristana and Lucian in the first two games, he was not able to seal the deal against the superior 5v5 play of MAD.
G2 has certainly looked less than stellar in its five-game win against S04 as well as its four-game loss to MAD Lions, but unlike the S04 series that was on a knife's edge, MAD simply outperformed G2 at nearly every turn and left no doubt who the stronger team was in the series. G2 Esports will now wait for either a rematch against Schalke 04 or a match against Rogue in the final lower bracket bout. The winner of that match will face off against MAD Lions in the finals of the Spring Playoffs.
