Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC is always safely guarded and it's impossible to know which fighter the developers are truly considering next. But that doesn't stop the Smash community from trying — very, very, very hard — to predict the next DLC.
Smash players have often looked for clues in Nintendo Direct, including possible easter eggs in the background of Sakurai's office. Could Sakurai's yellow shirt be a reference to Sora's yellow shoes in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance???? Sora for Smash confirmed???!?! We've also started fan rules and patterns that Nintendo has never confirmed, like how many Nintendo-based characters are allowed or that Mii skins eliminate the possibility of the character becoming a DLC fighter.
But this is all we have to work with when the team behind Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is somehow able to keep these monumental decisions a completely secret from their ravenous (and spiteful) fanbase.
But one fan theory has stood out to me — and the rest of the Smash community — as quite plausible. There's a pattern forming that may help narrow down the identity of the next Smash DLC.
So there are three types of Mii fighters: Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, and Mii Gunner. And I hate all of them equally. But listen...
When DLC fighters come out, Mii costumes are also announced. Some of these costumes have been from ARMS, Cuphead, Mega Man, Splatoon, Fallout, Bomberman, Monster Hunter, and the Geno costume from Smash 4.
The first two DLC fighters were Min Min and Steve. They can both be classified as brawlers, especially Min Min. Steve has a sword, okay, but he's more projectile/rush down than swordie. One of the past Mii costumes was also from ARMS, a Mii Brawler.
Then the next two DLC fighters were Sephiroth and Pyra/Mythra. And they both have swords! That coincides with a past DLC skin that was made for Mii Swordfighter.
You've probably guessed where this is going. And you're probably thinking, "Wow, this makes a lot of sense for the most part except Steve, but does that weird character even count as anything?" So if you're on that same wavelength, you've guessed that the next two DLC will be gunners if Smash developers are following this pattern.
A Mii Gunner costume will be announced or revealed. And this costume will be either from the same series as the possible next DLC or it will be a gun-based character in general, hinting that the next DLC fighter will also have a gun.
There is no confirmation from Nintendo that Smash is following this pattern. But there is also no proof that they aren't. It would also coincide pretty well with theories that Master Chief is the next DLC. You know, the guy from Halo. You know, that game with guns.
Other fans have predicted that the gun-wielding DLC fighter could be Cuphead, Sans from Undertale, Doom Slayer, Eggman, or even a Fortnite character. But this will all depend on the next Mii Gunner skin. Well, maybe. This pattern might be completely ridiculous and have nothing to do with Smash's plans whatsoever, which many in the Smash community have already reiterated: There. Are. No. Patterns.
But it's fun to speculate. Smash fans can't help it. Whatever proves that our desired character will become a DLC fighter in Smash, you know? So I'm personally awaiting a Toadette costume so Captain Toad can be the next confirmed Smash DLC. Nobody can stop me from wanting this. And nobody can stop me from continuing to add this to the end of my Smash articles (well, except my editors).
