CLG announced on Monday that they are entering VALORANT under the banner of CLG Red, their all-women CS:GO team that was founded in 2015.
"Six years ago, we formed CLG Red as the first step to provide a space for women in competitive esports," CLG explained in a press release. "Since then, CLG Red has won multiple CS:GO championships and proven themselves to be the best female CS:GO team in the world. We’re thrilled to continue building on that championship mindset with CLG Red VALORANT."
They announced that the first member of the new roster is Benita "bENITA" Novshadian. bENITA was one of the original members of the CLG Red CS:GO team and an eight-time world champion. She will now serve as the team captain of the CLG Red VALORANT team.
"I’m so honored and proud to be the in-game leader and captain of this new project,” bENITA said in the release. “It’s a dream to have multiple games within the Red brand.”
CLG indicated that we can expect the announcement of three more team members for CLG Red's VALORANT roster in the next few days.
CLG is the latest team to announce their entry into VALORANT with an all-female team. Cloud9, Godsent, Dignitas Fe, and more have all entered the new esports scene with dedicated women teams, while Evil Geniuses announced a mixed-gender roster in January.
In response to the rising number of female teams, Riot Games announced the VCT Game Changers tour, which is an all-female VALORANT tournament series. This announcement drew some criticism, with some arguing that these sorts of events encourage more segregation between men and women rather than solving the inequality issues in esports that would allow men and women to play together fairly.
With so many women becoming professional VALORANT players, VALORANT is off to a solid start to becoming one of the most female-inclusive esports in the world.
