Valheim has officially sold over five million copies on Steam, according to an announcement put out by the developers on Wednesday. The success is notable not only because the game is only a month old, but also because it was developed by a team of only five developers.
"You’ve done it again!" exclaimed Iron Gate Studios in a Steam post. "As you are reading this, the Valkyries have ferried more than FIVE MILLION souls to Valheim to uncover ancient treasures, sail savage seas and secure the tenth Norse world."
Valheim is a procedurally-generated RPG survival game with Dark Souls-inspired combat. The goal of the game is to survive a brutal, Viking-inspired world and eventually defeat ten bosses, each of which is based on Norse mythology. The game runs on the Unity engine and was developed by Swedish studio Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Publishing.
Valheim, which can be purchased for $19.99 USD on Steam, released as an early-access title on February 2nd, 2021. Since then, it has become an international phenomenon, selling millions of copies and driving millions of hours of watch time on platforms like Twitch.
Despite its wild success, the game is technically still in early access. According to the roadmap that was released by the developers last month, we can expect the release of new biomes, new modes, improvements to combat, and new forms of multiplayer interaction in 2021.
