According to a report by Deadline, Activision Blizzard is suing Netflix. The lawsuit is being filed as a response to Netflix allegedly poaching Activision Blizzard's Chief Financial Officer Spencer Neumann. Since Netflix signed Neumann before his contract with Activision Blizzard expired, Activision Blizzard has filed a lawsuit in response to Netflix poaching Neumann.
Activision is asking for a permanent injunction against Netflix, barring the streaming service from hiring Activision employees who may have “fixed-term employment agreements. Activision is also seeking financial compensation for punitive damages.
“Netflix unapologetically recruits talent without regard to its ethical and legal obligations,” declares the complaint filed by the home of Call of Duty against Netflix for wooing Activision chief financial officer Spencer Neumann in late 2018 to eventually become the streamer’s top finance guy.
According to Deadline, Netflix pulled former Disney exec Neumann over to their side as Activision was “negotiating with Netflix over a commercial partnership to distribute Activision’s linear media content,” according to the 13-page document. The complaint also features language that implies irritation from the side of Activision due to Netflix's apparent encroaching on the gaming space.
At E3 2019, Netflix hosted a panel called “Bringing Your Favorite Shows to Life: Developing Netflix Originals Into Video Games.”
The lawsuit also mentions a multi-platform game that is based on hit Netflix series Stranger Things, as well as a video game based on Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which serves as a prequel to The Dark Crystal, a film released in 1982. It is implied that the game specifically referred to as based on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, which came out in February 2020.
