G2 Esports has eliminated Machi Esports from the 2020 League of Legends World Championship, and in doing so, secured its 4th win in Group A to qualify for the Worlds 2020 knockout stage.
Machi came into the game needing to win to keep its Worlds 2020 hopes alive, and while it managed to hang on in the early game, the power of Rasmus 'Caps' Winther's Lucian was eventually too much for the Pacific Championship Series 1st seed to overcome.
Machi's last game of the day against Team Liquid, the only team it managed to defeat in Group A, will be played entirely for experience and to end Worlds 2020 on a high note. With a possible 2-4 best record, there is zero mathematical possibility for Machi Esports to survive Group A and move onto knockouts.
G2 looked dominant in both of its wins today against Team Liquid and Machi Esports, the former being especially important after TL took an upset victory in the first NA vs EU meeting of Group A.
At 4-1, G2 is at the very least guaranteed the 2nd seed in Group A, but Suning has looked strong throughout Worlds 2020 and is still capable of securing the top spot in the group. If Suning wins its next match against Team Liquid in Group A, Machi will have company on the flight home after the end of the day while G2 and Suning will be fighting solely for seeding. Results from Group A at the 2020 World Championship will be added to this story as the final matches of the day conclude.
UPDATE 10/8: Team Liquid managed to keep its hopes alive in Group A by defeating Suning and Machi Esports back-to-back, but since G2 Esports lost its last match in the group to Suning right after, TL is now eliminated alongside Machi. G2 and Suning will now face off in a tiebreaker for who will exit the group stage as a 1st seed.
UPDATE 10/8: Suning's tiebreaker against G2 was the third meeting of the two teams in Group A and Suning's third match of the day, but the Chinese side looked strong as it pulled ahead against G2 Esports early on.
While the win took longer than expected given the starting pace, Suning's win secured the 1st seed in Group A heading into the knockout stage. G2 Esports will enter the knockout stage as the 2nd seed. Team Liquid and Machi Esports were eliminated, finishing in 3rd and 4th, respectively.
