FlyQuest has upset Cloud9 3-1 in the Semifinals of the 2020 League of Legends Championship Series Summer Playoffs. The reigning LCS champion will be sent to the loser's bracket with TSM and Evil Geniuses, while FLY's win qualifies it as the first North American team going to the 2020 world Championship.
FlyQuest came into the series after a narrow 3-2 win over Evil Geniuses in the first round of the post-season, and while FLY was a Spring Playoffs finalist, its record in 2020 against Cloud9 was 0-7 heading into the series. FLY has been stylistically mismatched into C9 all year long, but adjustments from Jungler Lucas "Santorin" Tao Kilmer Larsen and Mid Laner Tristan "PowerOfEvil" Schrage was enough to overcome a rigidly drafting Cloud9.
FlyQuest's qualification for Worlds 2020 marks the organization's first international appearance in history, and while its specific seed has yet to be decided, FLY is the first North American team to punch its ticket to the World Championship in Shanghai.
Despite its summer slump, Cloud9 came into the series favored but drafted nearly the same exact composition in all four games regardless of result. 2020 LCS Spring Split MVP Robert "Blaber" Huang was outclassed by Santorin in the jungle, and C9 didn't win a single early game for the entire series.
FlyQuest moves on to round 4 of the 2020 LCS Summer Playoffs, and will play the winner of Team Liquid and Golden Guardians to see who will be the first team to qualify for the post-season finals. The loser of TL and GG will play against TSM in an elimination series while Cloud9 and Evil Geniuses will do the same, and the winners of those two matches will face off to guarantee qualification for Worlds 2020.
