MAD Lions is the first team in the 2020 League of Legends European Championship Summer Split to lock its position in the post-season. MAD Lions, currently 1st place, qualified for the 2020 LEC Summer Playoffs with its 11th win of the season over Origen.
MAD Lions showed it was one of the top contenders in Europe in spring, but with the slumps of G2 Esports and Fnatic, the rebuilt and rebranded Splyce squad has established itself as a top LEC team this summer. Support Norman "Kaiser" Kaiser has been exceptional this split, particularly in his mastery of Wukong when paired with Matyáš "Carzzy" Orság's fasting Senna.
MAD Lions flashed the Sona-Lux shared farm bot lane duo that made its major region debut in Cloud9's loss against Team Liquid in the League of Legends Championship Series Summer Split last week, but MAD's composition perfectly complemented the unorthodox pairing against Origen.
Kaiser explained how his team's draft helped the Sona/Lux pairing succeed where C9 had failed last week in a post- game interview on the LEC broadcast with Eefje "Sjokz" Depoortere. "We picked Renekton and Twisted Fate; champions that can do something in the early game and help get Sona and Lux through their early game," Kaiser said.
The solo lane pairing, as well as Jungler Zhiqiang "Shad0w" Zhao's Hecarim, kept things active early on and were only further enabled by Sona and Lux as MAD Lions extended its lead. However, Kaiser himself admitted to Sjokz that Origen could have played against the unorthodox composition better than shown.
MAD Lions is guaranteed to appear in the 2020 LEC Summer Playoffs and is the first team in the league to be able to boast that accomplishment. There are only four games left to play in the 2020 LEC Summer Split, and not a single team has been eliminated from post-season contention.
