The group stages of the League of Legends European Masters 2020 tournament have concluded. It took multiple tiebreaker series to determine which teams would advance, but only eight are left standing in the fight for the trophy and the honor of becoming the best up-and-coming squad.
The first quarter-final sees tournament favorites, mousesports, go up against AGO Rogue, the academy team of LEC team Rogue. The mousesports squad, which has well-known players such as Adam "LIDER" Ilyasov and Hampus Mikael "promisq" Abrahamsson on its roster, had a relatively easy group stage. Only once during the double Round Robin did they bite the dust, against Fnatic's academy team Fnatic Rising. AGO Rogue's path was a bit more jagged. A three-way 4-2 tie at the top in their group, AGO Rogue lost the final tiebreaker match against the French squad of LDLC OL, making AGO Rogue the lower seed of their group.
LDLC OL themselves have a difficult task awaiting them too. They're up against the academy team of LEC competitors Excel, BT Excel. Though Excel finished second in their group with a 3-3 score, which had to be settled via a tiebreaker match, the team showed glimpses of excellence when all the gears clicked. Their Mid Laner, Joran "Special" Scheffer, has performed so well that he is reportedly being promoted to Excel's main team for the Summer Split.
The third quarter-final, between Movistar Riders and Fnatic Rising, is looking especially interesting. While Movistar Riders did emerge as first seed from their group, their path to glory was a heavily contested one, as they fought their way up through two tiebreaker matches. In a series that only can be described as a pandemonium, a shaky looking Movistar Riders took down an even shakier Schalke 04 Evolution. Movistar Riders found their footing afterward, however, and then went on to defeat K1CK Neosurf with more confidence to secure the first seed in the group.
Lastly, K1CK Neosurf will take on the French powerhouse of GamersOrigen. K1CK Neosurf has impressively worked their way up all the way through the Play-In stage, where they emerged dominantly. Though they are the second seed of their group, it's evidently a squad that doesn't give up easily. GamersOrigen faced some resistance in the group stage, but the team came out on top with relative ease.
The European Masters quarter-finals commence tomorrow at 6 PM CEST/ 9 AM PST, and can be watched live on the EU Masters Twitch channel.
