On February 17th (PST), the match between FlyQuest and Team Dignatas took place in the 5th week of the 2017 NA LCS Spring Split. While FLY handily defeated DIG back in Week 3 with a 2-0 record, the opposite had happened today as DIG crushed FLY with a 2-0 record.
FlyQuest tried to hold down Laeyoung "Keane" Jang with several bans aimed at the midlane and by picking Jarvan IV against Keane's Zed. However, it was all for naught as Keane swept through DIG in both games.
Here is our interview with Keane.
Congratulations on your pay back against FlyQuest. How do you feel?
I think today is the first time that we've won with a 2-0 record. I'm glad that we took the match cleanly when we weren't expecting to win in the first place. I didn't expect them to pick Jarvan IV against my Zed, but I think it turned out well in the end.
What was your reason behind picking Zed in both games, and how did you lane against Jarvan IV? Also, why do you think they've tried to counter Zed with Jarvan IV?
Jarvan IV can't really escape after initiating a teamfight, so I thought Zed would have better presence in the late game. So I just tried to weather through the early game until Jarvan IV falls off.
Since I wasn't sure if we could win today's match, I just picked the champions that I wanted to play. That's why I blind-picked Zed, and it turned out to be great. I chose Zed again in Game 2 because it worked well in Game 1.
I think FlyQuest might have picked Jarvan IV to counter Zed, but in hindsight, I think Jarvan IV is an okay matchup for Zed.
FlyQuest's drafting felt like they were gunning for you by putting a lot of pressure on the midlane through banning Ryze and Cassiopeia while leaving up Camille. How did you react to it?
It did feel that way. Ryze and Cassiopeia are actually good counter picks to Zed, so it also came to mind that they might be trying to pick Zed as well. So, I've picked Zed before they did, and it worked out well.
You had a great comeback in Game 2 through a Baron steal and slaughtering FlyQuest in the subsequent teamfight. Can you tell us about how that came to be?
We knew that they were going for Baron, but we didn't know how much of Baron's health was left. So, our Maokai went up to Baron and saw that Baron was about to die. We just went in because even if we'd lose Baron, we were sure that we would win the teamfight and make up for the lost Baron. However, it was better that we expected since we've stolen Baron as well as winning the teamfight.
Your teammates are equally made up of English-speaking players and Korean-speaking players. I assume that you are acting as a bridge between the two. How are you getting along with them?
While we have an in-house translator that bridges between English and Korean speakers for our daily lives, I also help my teammates to communicate better with each other not just for daily lives, but also for in-game communications.
How do you communicate in-game? Are there any language barriers?
For today, we've used both Korean and English during the laning phase, but we only used English during teamfights. Also, I act as an interpreter on-the-fly when a more detailed explanation is needed.
Your next match will be against Team Liquid. What are your thoughts on the match?
After looking at this week's schedule, we thought to ourselves that we have to beat Team Liquid since we weren't sure whether we could beat FlyQuest. However, with today's victory, we have a lot less weight on our shoulders. I think today's win might lead to tomorrow's win as well.
It has been the first season with DIG for the majority of the team. How is the teamwork building up?
We've lost a lot of matches in the early season, falling to as low as 9th place. I think that's what makes today's victory even sweeter. Our teamwork seems to be improving as well, so I think we'll start to do better.
Thank you for your time. Do you have anything else to say?
I'm sorry that we couldn't live up to our fans' expectations in the early season. We'll do our best to keep playing like how we have played today, so please enjoy our games and expect us to do better in future.
