The Spring Playoffs of the League of Legends Pro League, China's official League of Legends competition, took an unexpected turn today. Tournament favorites and reigning world champions FunPlus Phoenix were swept out of the competition by JD Gaming, who handed FPX a decisive 3-0 loss.
The series between JD Gaming and FunPlus Phoenix was incredibly slow, which is uncharacteristic for the traditionally aggressive LPL play style. All three games lasted longer than 35 minutes, with the first and second game even reaching the 40-minute mark. Though the games were a tug of war all around, it was clear that JD Gaming played a far more polished game than FPX. The world champions looked unorganized, out of sync during most of the team fights. Though the occasional individual prowess shined through, the team effort of JD Gaming reigned supreme.
JD Gaming, who finished in second place at the end of the regular LPL Spring Split season, will take on Top Esports in the grand finals coming Saturday. Though there is no Mid-Season Invitational anymore this year due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the LPL still rewards Playoff teams with 'championship points' which count towards qualification for the 2020 League of Legends World Championship.
