In the 2020 League of Legends Champions Korea Spring Split, DAMWON Gaming defeated Afreeca Freecs 2-0 and stepped ahead in the fight to secure a spot in the playoffs. While Jang “Ghost” Yong-jun had stellar performances in bot lane, mid laner Heo “ShowMaker” Su also proved his ability.
You succeeded to have 3-game winning streak. How do you feel?
Today’s match was really important. It’s a relief that we won 2-0 and I feel really good.
It seems that the team’s performances have become a lot better.
It did get a lot better, but there are still many things to fix. We have to work harder. We didn’t deal with the invade in the early game well during Game 1. We need to be more precise and careful about that. In Game 2, we fought badly compared to our lead. We still lack in calls regarding focusing or teamfights.
In Game 2, you bought Cull on Zoe. It’s probably because your opponent was Kassadin. Was it a prepared strategy?
Kassadin is originally weak against AD champions. The jungle was Jarvan IV vs. Olaf and they had the upper hand, so I wanted to buy an AD item to strengthen the laning phase. I thought of buying Cull during the draft. Usually, it’s enough with Corrupted Potion, but I thought that I should buy either Cull or Doran’s Blade.
Nuguri also said that it looks alright and strongly recommended for me to buy Cull on Zoe. He said Doran’s Blade loses a lot of gold if I sell it later (Laughs). So I ended up buying Cull.
It seems Ghost is a big addition to the team.
As Ghost joined, it feels that the explosiveness from bot lane has become stronger. Nuclear and Ghost both have their own strengths. Having both of them is a great synergy. I think we’ll see positive things happen in the future as well.
It wasn’t easy, but now you’re contending for playoffs. What’s your goal for the season?
As much as we’ve reached the top five, I’d like to maintain our spot in the standings. Ghost said that he wants to reach first place by winning 8 straight games, but honestly, it doesn’t seem easy (Laughs). I remember losing right away after saying something like that last year. Realistically, I’ll be aiming for reaching the postseason.
Your next match is against T1.
They’re very stable. Macro, teamfights, laning… They don’t lack in anything. We need to prepare very solidly to have a chance to win.
It seems that Nuguri became more stable than before as well.
Nuguri used to be really aggressive and I think he’s now gaining stability. It feels Nuguri is trying to fit himself to the team more than before.
Lastly, a word to the fans?
We’ve started a winning streak and I’d really like to extend it. Thank you to the fans who always cheer for us. I’ll do my best to bring good results.
